Dental Implants: about the process
A consultation is the first step in restoring your teeth and smile with implant dentistry. This is where we will use advanced digital diagnostics to thoroughly analyze your teeth, gums, and surrounding oral structure. Of particular significance is the condition of the bone in your jaw. Once we fully understand your oral health condition and your personal goals, we can make recommendations for replacing teeth using implants. Healthy and stable jaw bone is a factor in candidacy for a same-day procedure.
Traditionally, we would schedule the placement of the implant or post into the jaw as the first step. If there is a need for adding bone to better support the implant, a bone graft procedure will be scheduled before this. A temporary may be placed, and there is a waiting period of several weeks to months as the implant fuses with the bone. At this point, your final dental crown, bridge, or cosmetic denture is attached.
When treatment is planned for a same-day placement of your implants and restoration, we will complete all phases of treatment in a longer appointment. Patients leave with a fully functioning smile, but the restoration will be temporary in the case of a bridge or denture. After a few months of allowing the gum tissue to adjust to the new denture, we will take a new set of impressions and create a final cosmetic denture.
In both cases, dental implants will provide the best support for your long-term oral health when compared to traditional options which were typically removable. An implant will also help to maintain your natural facial appearance.
If you have missing teeth or are faced with the prospect of having one or more teeth removed, consider dental implants and discuss your concerns during a consultation with one of our Annapolis dentists.
